Biographical Note

Ellsworth Walls was born in Crawford County, Indiana, on May 21, 1865. On September 17, 1887, he married Sarah Land (1869-1936). Walls worked on the railroad, farmed, sold stoves, and worked in a saw mill. While living in Arkansas in 1899, his seven-year-old daughter Minnie died. In the first 12 years of married life, they moved 22 times. Walls worked in stone quarries. In 1902, he "built a two room box house and moved into it." He was disabled for 10 months in 1903-1904 as the result of a stone falling on him and crushing his left leg. In 1912, the family moved to French Lick, Indiana where he worked at the hotel. His wife, Sarah Walls, fell down the steps into the yard and sustained injuries which resulted in her death on August 15, 1936. They were married 49 years.
