Biographical Note

John William Wainwright (1889-1960) was born in Lisbon, Ohio, the 8th of eleven children of Elizabeth and Luke Wainwright. Jack grew up in a musical family. At age 16, he moved to Galleon, Ohio, to work on a newspaper. When he lived in Oberlin, working for the Tribune, he organized the Oberlin Boys Band in 1913. Jack graduated from the Oberlin Acadmeny in 1914. He led town bands in nearby cities where he also had studios. During WWI, Mr. Wainwright toured extensively for Liberty Loan Bond drives. In 1919, Jack took a job in Fostoria, Ohio, to teach instrumental music. The Wainwright Band Camp, Olin Lakes, LaGrange County, Indiana, opened in 1927. Originally for boys, the camp soon became coeducational. The name was changed to Limberlost Camp in 1936. Mr. Wainwright was State Representative for four terms in the 1950s. Jack enjoyed producing minstrel shows. He and his wife Jeannette Streeter (married in 1918) had three children: Betty Evelyn, known professionally as Lynne Wainwright Palmer (born 1918); John Allen (born 1921); and William L. (born 1927). Mr. Wainwright was friends with John Phillip Sousa.
