Identifier: S1307

Scope and Contents

This collection contains hand-written letters and documents by Maurice Thompson, as well as three letters written to him in 1897 by Dr. Richard Gordon Gatling, inventor of the Gatling Gun. A hand-written manuscript entitled "The Spirit of Specialization" is enclosed in a blue folder. The "Hoosier Listening Post" article dated November 18, 1934, published in the Indianapolis Star, describes Maurice and his brother Will going hunting with bows and arrows. There are two copies, printed at Christmas 1934, of "Genius and Morality" by Maurice. This brief letter to Mr. Hoyt was originally written in 1887, and discussed Edgar Allen Poe and other writers. He wrote: "genius works independently of the moral character of the man who possesses it."
