Administrative History
The Washington National Monument Society was founded in 1833 for the purpose of creating a memorial to George Washington on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. They raised money through public donations to fund the construction. The obelisk monument was designed by architect Robert Mills. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848. The project halted in 1854 when the society ran out of money and fundraising proved unsuccessful. The land and the uncompleted monument was returned to Congress in 1876. The society then served as advisors to the congressional committee charged with completing the monument. The Washington Monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885.
