There are 2 items in this collection. The oldest document is a handwritten letter dated August 10, 1858. The Commissioner of the General Land Office, Thomas A. Hendricks, later U.S. Vice President, wrote to John S. Tarkington, Esq., Indianapolis, about the Military Bounty Land Warrant Certificate for 160 acres, which is returned because "the certificate of H. C. Newcomb is not accompanied by a certificate under seal from the proper authority of his official character at the time of taking the acknowledgement of Adam and Fielding Arnold, and of the genuineness of his signature." The other Arnold family members mentioned in the letter are: Elizabeth, Casandria, Thomas, and Susannah." Because two families with a girl named Susannah Arnold were in the 1850 census, it is unclear which family is referenced in this letter. David and Mary Arnold lived in Bethel, Ohio, with children Adam, Sarah, Susannah (age 10), Elizabeth, and Emiline. Samuel and Mary Arnold lived in Jackson, Indiana, with children Syntha, Elizabeth, Susannah (age 13), Amanda, Thomas, Daniel, and Emily. Mr. Hendricks refers to Susannah as possibly being a minor in 1858.
The other item in the collection is a large printed certificate declaring John S. Tarkington as a Notary Public from October 3, 1887. The back side of the certificate has an oath with Mr. Tarkington's signature.

Biographical Note
John S. Tarkington was born June 24, 1832 in Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana. After graduating from Asbury College (now DePauw University) in 1852, he studied law and was admitted to the Bar in 1855. John married Elizabeth Booth (1833-1909) on November 19, 1857. They lived in Indianapolis and had two children, Mary B. (1860-1937) and Newton Booth (1869-1946). Their son Booth Tarkington became a famous author. John served in the Civil War, in the 107th and then the 132nd Regiments. Mr. Tarkington was a judge of the 5th Circuit Court from 1870-1872. John died on January 30, 1923.
