This collection comprises a photostatic copy of a letter from Timothy Stratton in New Mt. Pleasant, Indiana, on March 29, 1852, to Casper and Calista Ann Budd in Waveland, Indiana, regarding the changing seasons, the passage of time, his mortality and inevitable death, farming, and seances held at his house and his theories about the summoning of spirits.

Biographical Note

Timothy Stratton, Jr. was born on March 8, 1802, to Elizabeth Esther (Horton) (1776-1838) and Timothy Stratton (1772-1853) in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He had nine siblings, including his sister Calista Ann (1805-1887), who marreid Casper P. Budd (1805-1894). The Strattons moved to Ohio in 1816. Timothy Stratton, Jr. married Mary Jane Lane (1809-1858) on March 27, 1828, in Clark County, Ohio, and they had several children: Elizabeth Ellen (1827-1846), Stephen A. (1830-1863), Robert, Isaac Newton (1839-1916), Lewis, Mary Jane (1842-1858), Cyrus Marion (1847-1921), and Casper Budd (1849-1851). The family moved from Ohio to Jay County, Indiana by 1840, where they had a farm in New Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson Township. Mary Jane Stratton died on January 20, 1858, and was buried in Stratton Cemetery in Jacy County. Timothy Stratton married Edith Nixon on May 20, 1858, in Jay County, and several of her siblings lived with the Stratton family. Timothy Stratton died on May 26, 1885 in Jay County, Indiana, and was buried in Stratton Cemetery.
