Scope and Contents

This collection contains military documents and letters pertaining to Caleb Hall Stone ranging from 1847 to 1917 regarding his service in the U.S.-Mexican War, which include an offical document appointing Stone as captain of the "Rough and Ready Guards" of the 4th Indiana Regiment dated May 29, 1847; two muster rolls from Captain Daniel Lunderman for Company G, 4th Indiana Regiment dated June and August 30-October 31, 1847; letters and envelopes ranging from 1881 to 1884; and documents regarding his miltary pension and death from 1912 and 1916.

Biographical Note

Caleb Hall Stone was born August 7, 1828, in Bloomington, Indiana. He was a private in Company G, 4th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, in the U.S.-Mexican War. In 1880, Stone was living in Camden, Quachita County, Arkansas with his wife Maria, born about 1841, and sons William P., age 19, and Fred Lee, age 4. He worked as a merchant. Stone died December 8, 1916, and was buried in Oakland Confederate Cemetery in Camden, Arkansas.
