Scope and Contents

This collectio ncomprises two newspaper clippings of articles from the column "A Hoosier Listening Post" by Kate Milner Rabb in the Indianapolis Star on February 15-16, 1935, regarding Charles Stewart, editor of the Indianapolis Sentinel and his letters to his family about his time as a student at the College of St. James in Hagerstown, Maryland from 1849 to 1851.

Biographical Note

Charles Gray McLean Stewart was born January 30, 1836, in Hagerstown, Maryland, to William (1804-1869) and Sophia Weems Doud (1809-1883). He attended the College of St. James, in Hagerstown from 1849 to 1851. Stewart became the editor of the Indianapolis Sentinel. His father owned a bookstore in Indianapolis, Indiana. His letters from school were saved by his daughter Susan Daulton Stewart (1864-1945). Stewart died on December 28, 1915, and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
