Scope and Contents
This collection comprises a 42-page manuscript written by Theodore Stempfel circa 1935 regarding the two German sculptors, Karl Bitter and Rudolf Schwarz, the creators of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Indianapolis, Indiana, whom he knew personally. Eberhard Reichmann edited this manuscript for publication in 2002 for publication on the 100th anniversary of the monument's dedication.

Biographical Note
Rudolf Schwarz (1866-1912) and Karl Theodore Francis Bitter (1867-1915) were German sculptors who created the statues on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Monument CIrcle in Indianapolis, Indiana. Karl deserted from the Austrian Army and came to New York in 1889. In 1896, Rudolf Schwarz married Anna Alexander and they lived in Indianapolis. Schwarz died in Indianapolis in April, 1912. Bitter died on April 20, 1915 after being hit by a speeding car in New York City.
Theodore Stempfel (1862-1935) is the author of this article entitled "Artist's Life, Rudolf Schwarz and Karl Bitter." Stempfel met Karl Bitter when he returned to Indianapolis in 1910. Stempfel likewise knew Rudolf Schwarz until his death two years later.
