Scope and Contents
The letter is date-stamped September 27 from Fort Wayne, and is addressed to A. Van Nechten, Esq., Catskill Greene County, New York. The letter was written by R. Starkweather on September 26, 1838, from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Mr. Starkweather told Mr. Van Nechten that: "Your lands are scattered through the country from Napoleon, Ohio, to Lafayette, Ind., a distance of 175 miles and about 40 in breadth to embrace them all." At the bottom of page one, Mr. Starkweather made a chart for lots and their cost in 1837 and 1838. On page two, he wrote: "As soon as the canal is open to the lake which will probably be in two years property will raise in their place and along the lines of that work." He concluded his letter by writing: "I am in a hurry to return to Eel River this evening. If you wish me to do any business for you here that I can do without embarrassing myself, I shall be happy to do it for a very moderate compensation over expenses."
