This collection comprises three letters and a small note from Raymond A. Spruance in Del Monte, California to Ashley T. Cole in New York, New York ranging from 1949 to 1961, concerning Cole obtaining autographs from Spruance and other members of the U.S. military administration from World War II in Cole's copies of the books Tarawa and Carrier War.

Biographical Note

Admiral Raymond Ames Spruance (July 3, 1886-December 13, 1969) commanded U.S. naval forces in the Pacific during World War II. He fought in the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. After the war, he served as president of the Naval War College and ambassador to the Philippines. Two ships have been named in his honor. The auditorium at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island is Spruance Hall, and has a bust of him in the lobby. His wife Margaret Dean (1888-1985) is buried with him in the Golden Gate National Cemetery.
