Scope and Contents

There are two items in this collection: the original May 25, 1839 letter and a copy of the letter on four long sheets of paper. The letter was sent to Oscar Spaulding's cousin, Granville M. Whitney (1816-1848) in Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont. Oscar tells Granville that they are farming 80 acres in Lima, LaGrange County, Indiana. They have 50 head of cattle, 5 horses, 2 colts, and 27 hogs. Oscar's father, Thomas Jefferson Spaulding, is building a house with kitchen, shed, and shop, and a barn. He says the family was sick with fever and malaria. He wrote some receipts for his cousin, including: Stoughton's Elixer, Bateman's Drops, British Oil, Sticking salve, Jet Black Bark, Lineament, and Varnish Blacking.

Biographical Note

Thomas Jefferson Spaulding was 49 years old in the 1850 federal census. He was living in East Lima, LaGrange County, Indiana, with his wife Sabra, age 50; and their children: Oscar Jefferson, age 26; Mary Ann, age 24; Wesley J., age 22; Marielle, age 19; Antoine M., age 16; Lois, age 9; and Mona, age 3. T. J. and Oscar Spalding were farmers who also kept livestock in Lima, in 1839, when this letter was written. The letter was sent to Oscar's cousin Granville M. Whitney who was born in 1816 and was living in Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont in 1839. Granville died on July 5, 1848 and is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery in Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont.
