Historical Note

The Indiana State Federation of Poetry Clubs was founded in 1941 due to the inspiration of June Winona Snyder, a charter member of the Indianapolis Poetry Society. She felt that Indiana poets needed to join together in a broader organization to establish connections between Hoosier poets and to encorage the formation of local poetry clubs. Snyder served as the organization's first president. The federation held monthly meetings in Indianapolis and held three annual conventions for poets and club members to gather. The monthly meetings were eventually discontinued in favor of Spring and Fall conferences held annually, at different locations around the state from year to year. In 1945, the federation began selecting a poet laureate, which was changed "premier poet" in 2007 to avoid confusion with the official state poet laureate, which was estabilshed by the Indiana General Assembly in 2005. In 2016, the federation's name was changed to the Poetry Society of Indiana (PSI). PSI's mission is "educational and literary; to, without prejudice or discrimination, unite and support Indiana poets, promote poetry writing, and encourage diverse poetic voices in Indiana through a variety of educational and artistic events and opportunities."
