Biographical Note

Oliver H. Smith was born on October 23, 1794, near Trenton, New Jersey. He lived in Pennsylvania and New York before moving to Lawrenceburg, Indiana in 1817. He married Mary Bramfield in 1821. They had three children. Smith began practicing law in 1821 in Connersville, Indiana. He served as a U.S. Congressman from 1822 to 1824. While in the House of Representatives, Smith served on the House Committee on Indian Affairs. After an unsuccessful campaign for reelection, he served as prosectuing attorney for the third judicial district form 1824 to 1825. He was later elected to the U.S. Senate where he served from 1837-1843. While in the Senate, he serbved on the Committee on Public Lands and as chiarman of the Committee on Engrossed Bills. Following his service in Washington, Smith moved to Indianapolis to resume his law practice. In 1845 he was given a chance to be a candidate for governor of Indiana but declined. Other noteable aspects of his life include his involvement with the railroad industry and authorship of the book "Early Indiana Trials and Sketches."
