Historical Note
The World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, took place in Chicago, Illinois in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. The exposition occupied 630 acres, with pavilions for each of the 44 states, including Indiana, as well as four territories (Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Utah).
Several monographs on Indiana subjects were written for the Chicago World's Fair, including J.L. Smith's monograph on Indiana literature. As of 1898, five of the nine World's Fair books had not been printed, including Smith's, and probably never were.
