Scope and Contents
This collection contains the legal papers of Reuben Small of Grant County, Indiana and includes county tax receipts (1835-1849); an August 3, 1840 indenture between Small and John and Sarah Shugart regarding 20 acres in Grant County; receipts for capital stock subscribed to the Lagro, Marion, and Jonesborough Plank Road Company (1849-1853); and two licenses issued by the United State Internal Revenue granting "Coate and Small" (January 6, 1864) and Reuben Small (May 8, 1865) the right to carry on the business of retail dealer.

Biographical Note
Reuben Small was born on April 5, 1812 in Highland County, Ohio to Joseph and Clarissa Clarkey Small. He married Elizabeth Shugart on March 25, 1835 and they had thirteen children. He was a miller and owned a grist mill in Jonesboro, Grant County, Indiana. He later moved to Wabash, Indiana and passed away there at the age of 74 on March 8, 1887.
