This collection contains various documents of Loury J. Silver, including a typewritten copy of his 1879 childhood diary; his Hamilton and Boone County, Indiana teacher's licenses (1886-1895); a biographical sketch of Silver and genealogical notes written by his daughter Edith (1977-1978); and a typewritten copy of a May 21, 1838 letter written by Peter and Catherine Hessong, Fay Silver's grandparents, from Marion County, Indiana to Jacob and Mary Kistner of Ladiesburgh, Fredrick County, Maryland.

Biographical Note

Loury J. Silver was born May 23, 1867 near Zionsville, Indiana to William Harrison and Mary Byers Silver. After graduating with the first senior class of Zionsville High School, he became an elementary school teacher. He married Fay Hessong (1872-1956) on August 14, 1895 and they had two daughters. After his family moved to Indianapolis around 1897, he began his long career as a postman. He passed away at the age of 71 on July 8, 1938.
