Scope and Contents

This collection contains photocopies of biographical information regarding William Edwin Sidney, Sr. and the genealogy of the Sidney family. The copies are made from handwritten pages and are not always legible. The collection also includes a selection of typewritten pages from William E. Sidney, Jr.'s memoirs and a short biographical sketch of his professional career by his granddaughter, Dorothy Sidney Smith. Mr. Sidney's partial memoir relates his experiences while employed at the Haynes Apperson Company in Kokomo, Indiana and his offer from Mr. W.D. Hartupee to work for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company.

Biographical Note

William Edwin Sidney, Sr. was born May 8, 1855 in Bath, England to Thomas and Sarah Ann Sidney. His father died when he was very young and he immigrated to America with his mother and stepfather in his late teens. He married Harriet A. Welsby (1858-1909) on September 5, 1876 in Des Moines, Iowa and they had 2 children. He was a miller and engineer and worked for a time for the water works of Frankfort, Indiana before his death at the age of 42 on June 6, 1897.

William's son, William Edwin, Jr., was born on January 11, 1880 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a master mechanic and engineer and worked for several companies before being employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He worked on government locks and dams and he was the inventor of the Sidney gate that was installed at the Panama Canal. He first married Margaret E. Hockman (1881-1909) on July 25, 1899 and they had four children. He then married Mable J. Sturtridge and they had one son before the marriage ended in divorce. He married Jessie R. Weirsmith on May 11, 1921 and they were married for more than 47 years when he died at the age of 88 on July 4, 1968.
