This collection contains a typewritten copy of "Diary - Eight Hundred Miles -Twenty Six Days - Covered Wagon - 1862 - Wyandott County, Ohio - Carroll County, Iowa" by Mary Alice Shutes made and copyrighted in 1967 from a copy created by Julia Curtis, Mary Alice Shutes Mallory's daughter, under the supervision of her mother. Mary Alice Shutes Mallory kept the diary, along with her stepmother, Ann, while the family traveled from Ohio to Iowa in 1862. The collection also includes copies of "Stack Thrashing - Ioway - 1890's" written by LeRoy L. Shutes in 1968 and "Indian Trails Paved Over," a narrative of stories told in three parts - "Before this Continent was America", "Marseilles, Ohio in the Eighteen Hundred Sixties", and "Ohio to Iowa in 1862" - that were told to Shutes by his grandfather, Gerathmil Hiram Shutes, and copyrighted by LeRoy in 1971. "Ioway" was how Mary Alice and LeRoy referred to Iowa in their writings.

Biographical Note

LeRoy L. Shutes was born July 26, 1886 in Paddock Township, Holt County, Nebraska to Archibald and Jennie Shutes. He married Mabel Worstall on September 11, 1910. Shutes was an electrical engineer and died at the age of 91 on February 22, 1978.

LeRoy's father, Archibald Shutes, was born on October 26, 1856 in Marion County, Ohio to Gerathmil Hiram Shutes and his second wife, Ann. Archibald married Jennie Cebila Byarly on October 25, 1882 in Carroll County, Iowa. He died in Sherburn, Minnesota on May 17, 1948.

Gerathmil Hiram Shutes was born January 23, 1829 in Marion County, Ohio. He married Nancy McKelvy in 1849 and they had two children. Their daughter, Mary Alice, was born on August 16, 1849. After Nancy's death in 1854, Gerathmil married Ann Poscar Drown in 1855. Gerathmil worked as a cabinet maker and a cobbler and also ran a small general store in Marseilles, Wyandot County, Ohio before he and his family moved to Jasper Township, Carroll County, Iowa in 1862. Gerathmil died on February 27, 1911.

Mary Alice Shutes married Enos Mallory on August 20, 1865 and they had six children. The Mallorys moved to Grants Pass, Oregon and Mary Alice lived there until her death on March 19, 1939.
