Biographical Note
Raymond Harley Sellers was born on September 10, 1881 to farmer John and Emma (Garshwiler) Sellers in Franklin, Indiana. He attended public schools of Franklin, Indiana, and worked his way through Franklin College as a reporter for the Franklin Daily Star. At 19, Ray left college to work one year at a railroad office in Reno, Nevada, before returning to Franklin to finish college. After graduation he worked at Franklin National bank, and on June 3, 1909, he married Lucy Valentine of Franklin, Indiana. In 1913, Ray resigned to work in his wife’s family business, Valentine and Valentine Mills and Elevator. The following year the couple had a son, John Valentine Sellers, born October 7, 1914. In September 1923, Ray purchased the Franklin Evening Star newspaper with co-owner W.W. Aikens, and reportedly wrote a front-page column for each issue. A member of the Masons, Ray was participant in the first initiation ceremonial of the Murat Temple Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was active in the Franklin Chamber of Commerce. He died on October 11, 1936, in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana.
