This collection contains George A. Schumacher's research papers regarding Indiana author, Maurice Thompson. The collection includes typewritten copies of brief reviews and résumés regarding Thompson's writings that appeared in newspapers and magazines ranging from 1873 to 1901; typewritten copies of forty-two letters sent by Thompson to the poet, Paul Hamilton Hayne, from the Duke University Library's Paul Hamilton Hayne collection (1874-1887); bibliographic material used by Schumacher for his book Maurice Thompson: Archer and Author (circa 1968); and a chronological list of Maurice Thompson's writings (undated).

Biographical Note
George A. Schumacher was born on June 16, 1904 in Indianapolis, Indiana to William and Sophia Schumacher. He was a graduate of Shortridge High School and received his bachelor's degree from Butler University in 1925 and his master's degree from the University of Virginia. He married Edna Mae Coffey (1903-1992) on July 20, 1929 and they had one daughter. Schumacher was a professor of English at Butler University from 1926 to 1952 and served as executive vice-president of the Indiana Telephone Association from 1954 to 1967. He was also a World War II veteran and served from 1942 to 1945 as a captain in the Army Air Corps. Schumacher had a keen interest in Indiana authors and had an extensive collection of letters, manuscripts, and other documents regarding Maurice Thompson. He published the book, Maurice Thompson: Archer and Author, in 1968. Schumacher died at the age of 68 on January 15, 1973.
