William W. Thumser collection
Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: S1148
Scope and Contents
This collection contains 12 monthly pocket diaries that William W. Thumser used to record his experiences while traveling the "All-Canadian Route" to the Klondike Gold Rush. His diary entries begin with his departure from Athabasca Landing on May 2, 1898 and continue daily as he describes his travels on the Slave, MacKenzie, and Rat Rivers, wintering at Shacktown, and ends at his camp near Bell City on April 30, 1899. He describes the rain, snow, and bitter cold weather; mosquitos, bear encounters, fishing, hunting, and caching goods; camp activities, fellow travelers, and his medical assistance to those who fell ill; and relates a poem and song about Shacktown. The collection also includes 3 copies of a typed transcription of the diaries, a small news clipping about the trip (October, 1898), and a February 21, 1899 handwritten receipt given to Thumser while in the Klondike.
