Scope and Contents
This 11-page typed manuscript gives John P. Robinson's memories of the Philippine Insurrection in 1899. Page 10 gives a summary of the experience, beginning with the organization of Company L, 4th U.S. Infantry at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, on October 20, 1898. The company left for New York on January 15, 1899, and shipped out on the 19th. They saw Gibralter, Port Said, Suez Canal, Perim Island, Ceylon Island, Singapore, and finally Manila on March 9th, having traveled a total distance from Illinois of 12,511 miles. They were in a skirmish on March 17th. During the Mololos campaign, March 25th to 31st, Company L was held in reserve. On June 2nd, they joined General Lawton's expedition against Morong. They saw fighting the remainder of the year. When John returned to the States, he wrote: "As we neared San Francisco, the ocean became quieter, the sea gulls came to meet us. The Golden Gate was a welcome, beautiful sight I shall never forget."

Biographical Note
John P. Robinson volunteered for military service, and trained at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, in 1898. He was placed in Company L., 4th U.S. Infantry, took a train to New York, and sailed to the Philippine islands, via the Suez Canal. They arrived in Manila Harbor on March 9, 1899.
