This collection includes 18 letters from Daniel Roberts to his mother and sister ranging from 1861 to 1864 regarding his experiences as a Union soldier during the U.S. Civil War. There is also a fragment of a letter written by Daniel and Sally Roberts in 1871.

Biographical Note

Daniel Roberts was born October 14, 1839 to John A. and Catherine A. Roberts (1817-1903) in Pennsylvania. He had 4 sisters: Hannah (1841–1923), Esther, Sarah, and Mary Ann. The family moved to Fall Creek, Madison County, Indiana by 1850. Roberts was working as a teacher there in 1860. After the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War, he enlisted as a private with Company K, 8th Indiana Regiment on September 5, 1861. In 1864, he joined Company I, 69th Indiana Regiment.

Roberts married Sarah J. "Sally" Riggs (1850–1938) and they had a daughter, Alice Mae (ca. 1874-1892). He worked as a farmer in Fall Creek in 1870 and later as a butcher in nearby Pendleton. Their daughter Alice Mae, who married Vinson H. Manifold (1873–1946) in 1892, died on July 9, 1895 and was buried in Mendon Cemetery in Pendleton, Indiana. Daniel Roberts died January 24, 1897, and was buried in Mendon Cemetery. Sarah J. Roberts died on March 27, 1938 and was buried with her husband.
