Scope and Contents

There are two photocopied letters in this collection. The first letter is to "Dear Uncle" dated August 1863 and is signed Sallie E. Repine, with a one-page note to "Dear Sister" from J. C. Repine. The second letter is dated May 1, 1865, from De Balls Bluff, Arkansas, to Sister from J. C. Repine. He tells her that he is looking forward to being discharged from the army, "but the death of the president may prolong the rebellion but I hope it will hurry it..." He added: "it is a miserable life to live a soldier but I must not complain."

Biographical Note

John C. Repine was born in 1832 or 1837 in Pennsylvania. In 1860, he lived in Kendallville, Noble County, Indiana. He married Margaret J., who filed for a widow's pension after his death. John served in the 1st Regiment, Indiana Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. In 1870, he was living in Rome City, Noble County, with his wife Margaret, age 35, and four children: Clinton, 14; Emma, 13; Cora, 12; and Roma, 8. In 1898, his occupation was switchman and he lived in Fort Wayne.
