Melvin French wrote this typed manuscript about the history of Edwardsport, Indiana, from 1830-1910.
This collection is one typed manuscript, which has been photocopied, containing 63 numbered pages with three additional pages, which are 18A, 35A and 54A. The history of Edwardsport, Indiana, begins in 1830 when 418 acres were allotted from Knox County for a town site named Edwards. This name changed to Edwardsville, and then changed to Edwardsport. The first citizen of Edwardsport was Edward Wilkes. Edwardsport is located in the north east part of Knox County on a high bluff overlooking the west fork of the White River. Mr. French lists the firsts, including the first gas lighting plant, the first blood hounds to search for robbers, and the first band. Churches, pastors, choir leaders, and charter members are given. Lodge members are listed on pages 24 to 26. Civil War soldiers, their burial places and dates are given on page 27. Beginning on page 28, Mr. French records the families and businesses located on each lot. For the homes, he gives parents and children. On page 63, Mr. French thanks those who helped him, and says that he remembered many events between 1887 and 1910. The final list is names in the 1840 records.
