Historical Note

Although World War I began on July 28, 1914, the United States did not officially enter until 1917. Indiana sent more than 130,000 soldiers to the battlefields, and more than 3,000 of them died. The war ended on November 11, 1918. John J. Powell wrote to several Indiana soldiers in the war.
