Biographical Note
Mary Alexander Thornton Posey (1754-1837), the daughter of Virginia aristocrat John Alexander, was born in Stafford County, Virginia. In 1773 she married George Thornton, a wealthy businessman and landowner in Fredericksburg, Virginia. After Thornton's death in 1781 while serving in the militia, Mary married Thomas Posey, who was appointed governor of the Indiana Territory in 1813 following Harrison's resignation. Posey served in that capacity until statehood in 1816, when he ran unsuccessfully for governor against Jonathan Jennings. Soon after, Posey was appointed Indian agent for the Illinois Territory in 1816, and died while serving in the office at Shawneetown in 1818.
