Collection includes a handwritten letter from Indiana Representative Gilbert Ashville Pierce on August 29, 1870, to Schuyler Colfax, Vice President of the United States under President Ulysses S. Grant. In the letter, Pierce urges Colfax to run for President of the United States in 1872.

Biographical Note/Historical Note

Gilbert Pierce was born in East Otto, New York, on January 11, 1839, and moved to Indiana with his parents. After attending the University of Chicago, Pierce enlisted in the ninth Indiana Volunteers, and by 1864 was Inspector General of the War Department. In 1868, he became a member of the Indiana House of Representatives. On June 25, 1884, Pierce was appointed Governor of Dakota Territory by President Chester Arthur, and was elected in 1889 to one term as United States Senator. In 1893, Pierce was appointed U.S. Minister to Portugal by President Benjamin Harrison, but was forced to resign due to failing health. Pierce died on February 15, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois.
