Collection includes original letter handwritten by future President Franklin Pierce from Hillsborough, New Hampshire, on November 27, 1829, to Colonel Abel C. Pepper of Rising Sun, Indiana. The letter indicates that Franklin Pierce and Abel Pepper were close friends at the time. In 1829 Col. Pepper had been appointed sub-Indian agent at Fort Wayne by General Andrew Jackson, hence the letter was forwarded to Fort Wayne, Indiana

Biographical Note

Abel C. Pepper was born in Kentucky on April 20, 1793, and emigrated to Indiana Territory in 1815 after serving in the War of 1812. Settling first in Dearborn County, he served as County Commissioner and Sheriff. Soon after his appointment in Fort Wayne as sub-Indian agent, he was promoted to the office of Indian agent and superintendent for the removal of Indians in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. In 1839 he was elected as Sinking Fund Commissioner, and in 1845 was appointed United States Marshal for Indiana by President James Polk. Col. Abel C. Pepper died at his home in Rising Sun, March 20, 1860.
