Scope and Contents
The collection includes comprises an unbound volume titled, "Letters of the Peddle Family: Civil War Period," which contains transcribed letters from members of the Peddle family, ranging from 1834 to 1901. The volume includes genealogical charts, background information, and a foreword by the compiler, Juliet Peddle, in Terre Haute, Indiana on February 1, 1947. The letters were found in a trunk belonging to Sarah Peddle Burton (1852-1939). There are also two photographic prints of collages of portrait photographs of Peddle family members, circa 1860-1865.

Biographical / Historical
William Ashford Peddle was born in 1787. He was a member of the Society of Friends. Peddle married Elizabeth Rugan (1788-1873), and they had several children: George Rugan (1812-1910), Elizabeth R. (1814-1859), Charles Rugan (1820-1893), Margaret (1824-1864), Sarah A. (1826-1854), Helen (1827-1883), William Ashford, Jr. (1829-1862), and John Bailey (1832-1909). He worked as a cooper until he lost his eyesight in his 40s and had to retire. William Ashford Peddle died on August 19, 1862, and was buried in Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.
George Rugan Peddle was born on April 12, 1812, to Elizabeth (Rugan) (1788-1873) and William Ashford Peddle (1787-1862) in Philadelphia. He married Mary A. Boyd (1821-1892) and they had at least three children: Anna (1846-1916), John B., Jr. (1848-1904), and Bella (1860-1860). George R. Peddle died on June 26, 1910 in Philadelphia and was buried in Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.
Margaret Peddle was born in 1824 to Elizabeth (Rugan) (1788-1873) and William Ashford Peddle (1787-1862) in Philadelphia. She was an artist, who designed wallpaper, and taught art classes. Margaret Peddle died on May 12, 1864 and was buried in Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.
Charles Rugan Peddle was born on October 5, 1820, to Elizabeth (Rugan) (1788-1873) and William Ashford Peddle (1787-1862) in Philadelphia. He moved to Madision, Indiana, where he worked as an engineer for the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad. Peddle maried Elizabeth Morgan Marks (1831-1864) in 1849. The couple lived in Indianapolis in 1850 and they had four children: William Henry (1850-1936), Sarah Potts (1852-1939), Elizabeth Rugan (1856-1910), and Charles Rugan, Jr. (1858-1934). Elizabeth M. Peddle died in 1864. Three years later, Charles R. Peddle then married Mary Elizabeth Ball (1839-1915) on April 30, 1867, in Vigo County and they had four children: John Bailey (1868-1933), Caroline Cheever (1869-1938), Mary (1873-1960), and Margaret (1875-1963). Peddle was engaged by Chauncey Rose of Terre Haute to buy four engines in Boston, Massachusetts, and help with the building of the railroad between Terre Haute and Indianapolis, connecting the lines. He worked for that railroad as a master machinist, railroad superintendant, and supervisor of machinery. Charles R. Peddle died on April 19, 1893, in Terre Haute, Indiana and was buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery there.
Sarah "Sally" Potts Peddle was born on December 17, 1852, to Elizabeth M. (1832-1864) and Charles Rugan Peddle (1820-1893) in Terre Haute. She attended a Quaker school in Philadelphia, staying with her aunt Elizabeth Peddle. She married Charles Burton on September 30, 1875, in Vigo County. Her husband had died by 1890. Peddle worked as the registrar at Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute from its foundation. Sarah Peddle Burton died on March 5, 1939 and was buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.
Margaret Peddle was born on January 28, 1875, to Elizabeth M. (1832-1864) and Charles Rugan Peddle (1820-1893) in Terre Haute. She married Theodor "Theo" Bodde, a Dutch immigrant and electrical engineer, in 1906 in New Jersey and they had a son, Derk. Margaret Peddle Bodde died on February 6, 1863, in Philadelphia.
