Scope and Contents

This collection includes photocopies of letters sent to Nathan R. Overman predominantly from Nathan Cadwallader of Wayne and Randolph Counties, Indiana (1850-1878). The collection also contains Overman's original August, 1850 articles of agreement for teaching school in Tetersburg and a photocopy and transcription of another agreement from November 11, 1851; photocopies of his 1861 Franklin Almanac and Diary; a December 6, 1866 note authorizing payment of additional bounty for Civil War soldier, Jeff H. Montgomery; and a March 29, 1869 application of James F. Avis for additional bounty for his service in Company K, 153rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Photocopies of a February 3, 1903 letter sent to a Mr. Frank Moon (?) from Lewis Seiss of Tipton, Indiana are also included.

Biographical Note

Nathan R. Overman was born in Randolph County, Indiana on April 11, 1827 to Jason and Miriam Overman. He moved with his parents and siblings to Tipton, County Indiana in 1849. He married Mary J. Cox in 1854 and they had 5 children. For eleven years, Overman taught school, farmed and engaged in brick making, before beginning the practice of law in 1861. He was elected to the 36th Judicial Circuit in 1878 and served until his death on October 25, 1883.
