Scope and Contents

The collection consists primarily of Reece A. Oliver’s letters from the Philippines and China to his brother Kenneth A. Oliver and other family members. The letters include information regarding the Philippine schools, the effect of World War I on the Philippines, his work in China and conditions in the Philippines before and after World War II. Also included are Kenneth Oliver’s expense (1914-1924) and account books (1917-1925); brochures, clippings, and other printed materials relating to the Philippines; and a pamphlet, "Drill Manual for Philippine Cadets" by Reece A. Oliver. The collection mentions Gov. Paul V. McNutt as being well liked in the Philippines and mentions Reece A. Oliver’s desire for him to become president (6-29-1939 and 11-1-1939).

Biographical Note

Reece A. Oliver was born in Akron, Indiana on August 1, 1889. Oliver worked as a teacher in the Philippines from 1914 to the1930s, was a field manager for the American Red Cross’s China Famine Relief Operation, and worked for the Philippine Board of Education. He was also an officer in the Philippines during World War II, and fought with the Philippine guerrillas and served as a U.S. official in the Philippines (1946-1950). Reece A. Oliver died on March 20, 1966 in Akron, Indiana.
