Scope and Contents

This collection includes John Odell's school workbook containing his compositions, poems, mathematical equations, and expenses (circa1855 to 1860). The book was re-used as a scrapbook and has news clippings attached to the pages regarding the U.S. Civil War and other items of interest to Mr. Odell (circa1860-1886). One item of note is a clipping of an address he gave during a June 20, 1860 debate on the question of popular sovereignty in the territories.

Biographical Note

John C. Odell was born on December 6, 1838 in Carroll County, Indiana to James and Sarah Odell. He attended the Battleground Collegiate Institute and Asbury University (now DePauw University) and was editor and publisher of the Delphi Times from 1863 to 1864. Odell was admitted to the Carroll County bar in 1879 and was actively engaged in the practice of law for more than 40 years. Odell was considered an authority on local history and helped organize the Carroll County Historical Society. He died at the age of 86 on July 6, 1925.
