This collection contains DeForest O'Dell's paper that he read before the Indianapolis Literary Club on March 16, 1953. The paper is titled, "Indianapolis Newspapers in 1853 and 1953," and it offers an in-depth discussion about Indiana's capitol city newspapers and how and why the publications differed over the century.

Biographical Note

DeForest O'Dell was born on January 1, 1898 in Atlanta, Georgia to Thomas And Ella O'Dell. He married Caroline Godley (1905-1995) on June 18, 1927 and they had two daughters. He taught journalism at Butler University (1925-1932), worked for the Associated Press, and served as dean of the Drake School of Journalism at New York City (1933-1938). O'Dell was later on the faculty of Western Illinois State Teachers College (1938-1945), and returned to Butler in 1946 as head of the journalism department. During his early years, he was employed by all three Indianapolis newspapers. O'Dell was chairman of the Butler University Journalism Department at the time of his death on June 19, 1958.
