Biographical Note

James Noble was born on December 16, 1785, near Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. His family moved to Campbell County, Kentucky, in 1795. Noble practiced law in Kentucky before moving to Brookville, Indiana. He was a judge and a member of the first Indiana Constitutional Convention in 1816. Noble then served in the first State House of Representatives. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1816 and served until his death on February 26, 1831. During his time in the Senate he served as chairman of the Committee on Pensions and on the Committee on the Militia. He is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
