Biographical Note
Benjamin Vestal Hubbard was born to William B. and Luda Elizabeth Vestal Hubbard in Monrovia, Indiana on June 29, 1854. He was the youngest of at least nine children, including Sarah A., Martha J., Edith, Nathen E., Rhonda V., James S., Anna M., and William H. William B. died in 1862, [Ludah] in 1863.
Benjamin worked as a reporter for the Indianapolis Morning Sentinel, probably in the 1870s. He was sent on a newspaper mission to the South in 1877, when President Hayes turned out the "Carpetbaggers." He was later admitted to the bar and lived in Brookdale, Kansas in 1880, where he practiced law until a drought depopulated the country. He studied insurance, under the tutelage of Sheppard Homans, the actuarial and mathematician. Benjamin married his wife Mary F. Hubbard on December 12, 1882. He lived in Chicago, Illinois and was divorced in 1900. He and Ella M. Rourke McEnnis were married in Chicago on January 29, 1901 and later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. They had moved back Chicago by 1920, and he was widowed and living in the James C. King Home for Oldmen in Chicago by 1930. He wrote several books on insurance and social issues and was also a publisher.
He died in Chicago on July 7, 1934 and was buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Worth, Illinois.
