Scope and Contents

This collection contains a typewritten history of the 83rd Indiana Volunteer Regiment, the Vicksburg campaign, and a list of men earning the Medal of Honor for action at Vicksburg compiled by Thelma Murphy ca. 1963. The collection includes photocopies of the pension records, ranging from 1864-1936, for the following Medal of Honor recipients: Clinton L. Armstrong (1845-1899); Thomas A. Blasdel (1843-1932); William W. Chisman (1844-1925); John Wesley Conaway (1843-1913); David H. Helms (1838-1921); Ira Hough (1843-1916); Jacob H. Overturf (1842-1900); Reuben Smalley (1839-1926); William Steinmetz (1847-1903); and Frank Stolz (1844-1926). Copies of Blasdel, Chisman, and Stolz Medal of Honor Certificates from 1916 are also included.

Administrative History

The 83rd Indiana Volunteer Regiment was organized at Lawrenceburg, Indiana on September 4, 1862 with Benjamin J. Spooner, a lawyer from Lawrenceburg, as Colonel. The 83rd was an infantry regiment made up of 9 companies of volunteers for 3 years and 1 company of drafted men who served for 9 months. The company served in many military actions including Vicksburg, Mission Ridge, and the Atlanta Campaign. On June 3, 1865 the regiment was mustered out of service.
