Biographical Note
James A. Mount was born in 1843 to a Montgomery County, Indiana farmer. He served for 3 years during the U.S. Civil War in the 72nd Indiana Infantry. Following the war, Mount began tenant farming in Montgomery County. After a decade, he was successful enough to buy the land he was farming, and soon became a prominent farmer and landowner. In part because of his popularity and notoriety as a farmer, Mount was elected to the Indiana Senate in 1888 to serve a term. He was elected governor of Indiana in 1896, and died in 1901 two days after his term expired.
