Biographical Note

Charles W. Moores was born on November 2, 1828, in Vermillion County, Illinois. After graduating from Wabash College in 1852, he moved to Indianapolis to teach at the State Institution for the Deaf and Dumb. He married Julia Dumont Merrill with whom he had two sons, Merrill and Charles W., Jr.. He and his brother-in-law, Samuel Merrill, started a book store and publishing business that became the Bobbs-Merrill Company. His poor health had kept him from military service until the Civil War. In 1864, he enlisted in the 132nd Indiana Infantry and died a short time later in Stevenson, Alabama.
