Historical Note

In December 1860, the Lady Pike steamboat shipped fresh beef to Memphis but returned with its cargo because the consignees refused to eat Northern beef. In January 1861, artillery was ordered to Vicksburg by the Governor of Mississippi. The Evansville Journal carried an article entitled: “The Mississippi Cannot Be Closed.” Mr. Miller follows the story of shipping from Evansville, Indiana, including traitorous conduct, transportation of artillery and ammunition, use of boats as hospitals. On page 43, he said: “Guerrilla warfare was becoming more serious and travel on the Ohio River was extremely hazardous.” In 1865, the boats “brought soldiers by the hundreds upstream to various points, to be mustered out of service.”
