Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence between members of the Reynolds family ranging from 1849-1907. The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters written by Verus Reynolds and sent to his Aunt Catherine Reynolds Sheppard. The collection also includes letter sent to Catherine from her mother, Susannah Reynolds; her brothers Joshua and Jeremiah Reynolds; sister Delilah Reynolds; cousins Robert B. Reynolds and John and Jane Elliott; and her nephew Herbert Reynolds and his wife Fanny.

Other items in the collection include a letter to Cora Warren at Mitchell, Indiana sent from Winona Lake, Indiana and signed Sadie (August 5, 1907); a letter to Mrs. Florence (Warren) Lewis at Mitchell from Myrtle, Spray, and Fanny Newton of Hillsboro, Illinois (September 10, 1907); a canceled check written to the Harry H. Lobdell Co. (October 30, 1911); a first day of issue Indiana Territorial Sesquicentennial commemorative envelope and stamp issued at Vincennes, Indiana (July 4, 1950); a golden anniversary 20th Century Limited commemorative envelope post marked from New York (June 15, 1952); and a handwritten biographical note regarding General George W. Cook (undated).

Biographical Note

Jeremiah Reynolds (1787-1842) was the son of William and Ann Reynolds of Guiford County, North Carolina. He married Susanna Chamness (1789-1862) and they had eight children: Delilah (1813-1860), Josh (1815-1898), Hannah (1817-1910), Lewis (1819-1905), Joshua (1821-1883), Abigail (1824-1826), Catharine (1826-1911), and Jeremiah (1828-1862). Their son Joshua married Cynthia Smith (1821-1883) and they had seven children including sons Verus (1849-1940) and Herbert (1867-1941). Their daughter Catherine married Wesley D. Sheppard (1823-1864) and they had six children. The Sheppards moved to Indiana in 1850 and settled in Sullivan County. By the 1870s, Verus Reynolds was living in Parke County, Indiana. He married Lydia Morris (1856-1941) and they lived in several small communities in Parke County before moving to El Modena, California around 1888. In 1892, they moved back to Indiana for a couple years before returning to California and settling in Whittier in 1894.
