Mathias Masten was born in Kent County, Delaware and became a soldier in the American Revolutionary War at age 16, and fought in the Siege of Yorktown according to his family history. After the war he moved to North Carolina where he met his wife Sarah Stanley, where they lived until 1832 rearing nine children. Family stories indicate that as Mathias was a Quaker he was opposed to slavery, and decided to move north to Hendricks County, Indiana with four of children and their families so that they would not be a part of it.
