The collection includes military orders, including orders issued from the offices of generals George Meade, Henry W. Halleck, and Alfred Pleasonton; military communications, muster rolls, commissions, and other official military papers; McClure's pension papers (1884-1900); papers relating to the military service of Dr. William J. McClure of Madison who served as Commissary of Subsistence in Washington D.C.; and personal correspondence and correspondence relating to the McClures' appointments during the Civil War.

Biographical Note
William S. McClure, of Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana was a captain and major in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry (45th Indiana Regiment), serving in the Army of the Potomac (1861-1864). McClure was appointed colonel, 9th Indiana Cavalry (121st Indiana Regiment), but declined appointment and resigned from the Army (February 1864).
