This collection includes a transcribed copy of a letter from Howard McCormick in Leonia, New Jersey to Virgil Hoagland in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 18, 1912 regarding McCormick's personal news and details of his career as an artist to date. The original letter is located at in the Indiana artist files at the Indianapolis Museum of Art Library and Archives.

Biographical Note

Born August 19, 1875 in Hillsboro, Indiana, Howard McCormick was a painter, illustrator, muralist, and wood engraver. He studied under William Forsyth at the Indiana School of the Arts (1894-1895), William Merritt Chase and Francis Luis Mora at the New York School of Art (1899-1900), and Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian in Paris, France (1901-1902). McCormick also spent time in Mexico and Arizona, studying local and Native American culture. He worked as an illustrator for numerous publications, such as The Indianapolis News, Cosmopolitan, The Delineator, Collier's, and The American Magazine. McCormick is best known for his museums murals depicting Native Americans of the Southwest, such as the background murals for the Hopi, Navajo and Apache habitat installations at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, New York. He and his family settled in Leonia, New Jersey where they lived for several years before his death in 1943.
