Biographical Note

John McClelland and his brother, Beattie, were born in County Down, Ireland (Northern Ireland today) to parents John and Mary (Beattie) McClelland. The brothers immigrated to the United States in the 1820s where John became a farmer in Eastport, Ohio. Beattie, a lawyer, settled first in Fayette County, Pennsylvania before moving to Winchester, Indiana in 1839 where he took an appointment as a probate judge. Beattie continued in public service, even serving as a delegate at the Indiana Constitutional Convention of 1851. He moved to Columbus, Indiana in 1852 where he lived until his death on June 26, 1891.
