Biographical Note

NIcholas McCarty, Sr. was a prominent entrepreneur, landowner, and politician in early Indianapolis, Indiana. Born September 26, 1795 in Moorefield, Hardy County, Virginia (West Virginia today), McCarty settled in Indianapolis in 1823. He established one of the city's first general stores at the southwest corner of Washington and Pennsylvania streets, which became known as "McCarty's Corner." His mercantile venture proved profitable and McCarty went on to open more store locations in Covington, Cumberland, Greenfield, LaPorte and Waverly, Indiana. His other entrepreneurial pursuits included the production of ginseng, silk, and hemp. In 1828, McCarty married Margaret Hawkins in Boone County, Kentucky and they had four children: Nicholas, Jr., Frances, Susanna, and Margaret. Before his death on May 17, 1854, he held several local and state public offices, including that of Indiana state senator (1849-1852) and Indianapolis city councilman (1853-1854).
