Scope and Contents
This collection contains a typewritten copy of Joshua Lewis's reminiscences that he wrote in February of 1905. The manuscript was dedicated to James Madison Lewis and the copy was made September 11, 1952 for Harold Lewis. In the manuscript, Lewis relates biographical information and his experiences serving with Company H, 20th Indiana Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. Some of the battles he describes include his eyewitness account of the March 8-9, 1862 Battle of Hampton Roads, also know as the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack (CSS Virginia); the Battle of Seven Pines (or Fair Oaks); the Seven Days' Battle; and the Battle of Glendale or Frazier's Farm. Lewis also discusses his illnesses and having to spend time in military hospitals, his 100 day service with Company G, 133rd Indiana Infantry, and his life pursuits after the war.

Biographical Note
Joshua Lewis was born on January 1, 1843 in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana to James J. and Mary Lewis. He was a private in Company H, 20th Indiana Infantry (July, 1861-January, 1863) and Company G, 133rd Indiana Infantry (May-September, 1864). Lewis married Marinda Harrison (1846-1915) on March 30, 1865. He farmed for many years and taught school in the winter. In 1882, he tried his hand in the merchantile business, but was unsuccessful and returned to teaching. Lewis became a minister in 1895 and served churches in several Indiana communities. He died in October, 1914.
