Scope and Contents

This collection contains a March 26, 1878 handwritten letter by John A. Logan that was sent to J.H. Osgood of Catlin, Vermillion County, Illinois. In the letter, Logan discusses the upcoming campaign in Illinois, Republicans and the need to be careful about who was nominated, and solicits Osgood's opinion. The collection also includes the envelope which is postmarked from Washington D.C.

Biographical Note

John Alexander Logan was born February 9, 1826 in Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois to Dr. John and Elizabeth Logan. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1852. A Democrat, he served in the thirty-sixth and thirty-seventh Congresses before resigning in 1862 to join the Union Army during the Civil War. He served through 1865 and attained the rank of major general. After the war, he became a Republican and served in the Fortieth, Forty-first, and Forty-second Congresses. He resigned in March, 1871 after being elected Senator. Prior to the Civil War, Logan was an unapologetic racist, but following the war he worked for African-American civil rights and supported women's suffrage. He died in Washington D.C. at the age of 60 on December 26, 1886.
