Scope and Contents

This collection comprises a biographical document entitled, “You Will Not Cut My Leg Off,” which describes John Martin Walker’s life, from the beginning of the U.S. Civil War until his death on June 25, 1929. It details the state of medical care during the war, including battle wounds, sanitation, malnutrition, and hospital conditions. There are also copied materials such as an a certificate and pages from the The Annual Report of the Adjutant General, volume 2, which provides information about the three-years service of the 7th Indiana Regiment, as well as a 5-page summary of the principal events, from August 17, 1861 to October 27, 1893, of the 7th Regiment; a map and one-page identification sheet; and a list of principal engagements which John Walker participated in during 1861-1864.

Biographical Note

John Martin Walker was born on January 7, 1842 to Alexander and Elizabeth Walker in Cold Springs, Dearborn County, Indiana. He was the eldest of 5 siblings: Sarah J., Mary L., William S., and Elizabeth A. He enlisted in Company A, 7th Indiana Infantry, in September 1861 during the U.S. Civil War. Walker was wounded at the Wilderness and also Petersburg. He mustered out in 1864, after 3 years service.

Walker married a neighbor, Emma Regan (1848-1872), about 1866 and they had 3 children: Jesse A. (1868-1940), Elmer (1870-), and Hattie Emeline (1872-1929). By 1870, they lived in Ripley County, Indiana where Walker worked as a laborer. Emma died in after giving birth to their third child about 1872. Walker then married Marenda Riddle (1859–1928) on March 25, 1875 in Indiana. The family moved to Albion, Reno County, Kansas by 1880. The couple had 15 children: Ursula Pearl (1877-1931), Lucia May (1878-1976), Alice Maude (1880–1966), William Wallace (1883–1966), John Jerome (1884–1959), Flora Rosella (1886-1966), Ruby Viola (1888-1950), Bessie Beatrice (1890–1937), Frederick Eugene (1892-1983), Daisy Wynona (1893–1995), Charley Clyde (1895–1919), Hazel Jane (1897-1898), Jimmy Mckinley (1898-1985), Teddy Roosevelt (1900-1910), and Donald Leslie (1902-1978). The Walkers moved to Kendrick, Idaho by the birth of their son Frederick in 1892, where John Walker worked as a carpenter and laborer. Walker died on June 24, 1929 in Spalding, Idaho and was buried in Lapwai Mission Cemetery in Spalding with his second wife.
